Minimalist Fashion Is The New Aesthetic

Minimalist Fashion Is The New Aesthetic

They say simplicity is beauty. It goes the same way when we talk about fashion styles.

There are tons of trendy fits and fads out there, but if there's one thing that has stayed until now, it's the minimalist look. Minimalism has been sticking in our lives for many years, but it was never considered a part of any fashion eras before. Unlike the trendy Flapper style in the 1920s or the Disco outfits in the 1970s, Minimalism is known for being the classic go-to style of history and moving forward.

Minimalist Lifestyle Today

During my college years in the Philippines, I wasn’t a big fan of minimalism, and I never thought I’d be one. I spent half of my allowance on beautiful and trendy clothes. Every month, I visited thrift stores, and if my time couldn't afford it, I shopped at small clothing stores online. I deeply relied on my weekly allowance, so instead of purchasing good quality clothes, I went for cheaper ones with various colours and designs. With that, I’ve collected tons of unused garments from all the thrift shopping trips I made. I admit that I hate repeating clothes, so I send them away to my cousins and friends when I get tired of them. Ever since, being extraordinary with fashion has been in my blood; however, I realized later on that I can still be fashionable despite shifting to a simple and sustainable style. Gradually, I noticed that some people in my age and generation have switched to this kind of mentality as well. Although I still have my inner vibrant fashionista self in me, that cannot overpower my love for minimalism now.

Alongside the fashion aspect, this lifestyle is shifting the new aesthetic. It’s getting more popular nowadays, especially with young adults. When the pandemic started, everyone had so much time, experimenting with home and room decors. With that, many photos related to this newly introduced aesthetic are widespread on social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. Even young influencers and celebrities are transitioning from glam to subtle looks.

Minimalist Fashion Wardrobe Must-Considers

There are several reasons why people are converting to this kind of fashion sense. Apart from being sustainable and environmentally friendly; it’s clean, comfortable, classy, and easy to mix and match. If you’re convinced enough to switch to a cozy and aesthetic style, I’m here to give you an overview of things that you need to consider in achieving it.

Must-Consider #1: A consistent colour palette.

Practicing a minimalist fashion style isn’t just about owning a few pairs of clothing; it’s also about making sure that your wardrobe is pleasing to the eyes. Choosing a consistent colour palette for your clothes does help a lot in maintaining a clean and organized closet. I suggest choosing neutral colours as it’s easy to mix and match, and it fits any occasion. Either way, you’re free to enjoy vibrant colours as well if that’s what makes you feel more yourself! The gist is to ensure that you’re consistent and that your colour palette matches and complements each other from top to bottom when they’re worn.

Must-Consider #2: A good amount of clothing that fits all seasons and occasions.

Another thing to consider when you’re switching to a minimal wardrobe is to categorize your clothes according to its purpose. You don’t want to struggle when an important engagement pops-up, so it’s important to be ready at all times. Too much of anything isn’t practical, and too little of it isn’t good either. When it comes to fashion, it’s also crucial to ensure that you’re balancing your closet. If your everyday style is a combination of jeans and a basic tee, you don’t want to keep purchasing the same style if you already have a good amount of them. Instead, you’ll list down the styles that you don’t have in your closet yet, for example, corporate attire used during interviews or a formal dress worn to a special event. If you keep track of your closet and purchase only a good amount of what you need, you won’t feel bad shopping for yourself because you knew that you needed all of them.

Must-Consider #3: Investing in good brands.

Personally, I hated investing in good brands before. I used to prefer to buy lots of cheaper tops than purchase a single top that would cost me double the price of what I can buy from other shops. I thought that was a practical move, but I realized that it was one of the reasons why I became a little mindless with my purchases. Because I knew it was cheap, I kept splurging money on clothes I thought I needed, but later on, most of them weren’t even used. This is why I recommend investing in brands with good quality. It’s not just about the reputation of the company nor the quality and longevity of the product, but also, it helps you become more mindful with your purchases. With the idea that the products cost more, you’ll give yourself more time to decide whether you need it or not.

Minimalist Fashion as the Go-To Aesthetic

I bet you’ve seen these kinds of fits on Instagram and Pinterest already. The combination of warm tones and neutral colours is viewed as aesthetic now, and this proves that minimalism is not boring at all. It looks simple, but there’s something in it that makes it so attractive. Whether it be pyjama days at home, casual outfits to work, or a fancy dress for a formal event, the concept of minimalism fits all categories of fashion.

I contemplated the reason why I shifted from being an extraordinary fashionista to a lowkey fashion enthusiast. Then, I figured it was probably because I’m in the stage of my life where I crave more comfortable outfits without compromising my love for nice clothes. I believe minimalism brings out the beauty of simplicity, so with this shift, I can harmonize my mood and sense of style.

Moreover, being in my early 20s also did affect the way I express myself through fashion. Currently, I prefer it to be effortless but attractive, rather than being loud and vibrant. That’s also probably one of the reasons why I noticed that some people of the same age and generation as me are being more open in switching to this style.

Minimalist Styles To Inspire You This Fall

The good thing about a minimalist fashion style is its flexibility. For as long as you stick to your wardrobe’s colour palette, there’s nothing to worry about when deciding your outfits. Consistency is an important factor, but most of all, you need to figure out your ‘aesthetic’. With that in mind, I’ve listed a few minimalist fits that may inspire you this Fall.

Monochrome Style

Monochrome highlights a sleek and appealing style that naturally catches anybody’s attention. It gives you that celebrity feel and instant confidence while walking on the streets or in a crowded room. What I love about this style is it’s effortless, but it looks fine and elegant. Whether it’s a knitted long sleeve with trousers or an oversized hoodie with sweatpants, as long as it has the same shade, it looks exquisite.

Complementary Style

Complementary style is easy to follow as it only includes two (2) colours. The only thing to take into consideration is using the colours that match together when it’s combined - similar to brown and beige, black and white, nude and light colours.

Mix & Match / Layered Style

Mix & Matching or Layering clothes can be tricky if you’re not familiar with your wardrobe. In order to achieve this style, it’s important to experiment with your taste. The first thing to consider is combining the right colours. Your palette for this style should not go below two (2) colours nor beyond three (3) shades that complement well with each other (e.g. black, white, and nude). Using one (1) patterned clothing is also nice to add detail to your look!
