TikTok Trends on your FYP

TikTok, the biggest social media app presently, is one of the few apps where anything and everything seems like it can come up on your ForYouPage (FYP). You can go from watching a fashion styling video to a guy wrapping rubber bands on a watermelon to get it to explode in one finger swipe. While scrolling can feel endless, TikTok’s key algorithm often ends up picking up exactly what you’ve been looking for. From the thousands of fashion trends and styling videos that are popular on the app, certain ones have been standing out from the rest. We’re here to help you understand what’s trending on the app and pick your favourites from your feed.
1.Balletcore
If you’ve never heard of Balletcore, the trend is a mix of athleisure and ballet fashion, taking inspiration from off-duty ballerinas. First popular in the 2010s, this is actually a resurging trend, one that’s coming back bigger than ever. From everything from wrap tops, big poofy skirts, ballet flats, and even leg warmers, it’s for sure to be one of the biggest trends of the season. A huge new trend this season is ballet heels, which are absolutely perfect to dress up for a night out or to dress down for fun daytime activities. As we go from warm days to cool summer nights, a mix of leg warmers with ballet flats will keep you cool and warm when needed.
2.Pattern on Pattern on Pattern
Once a cardinal fashion sin, pattern on pattern has become more popular as TikTok grows in the fashion community. People are becoming more experimental in their fashion choices, and mixing plaid with checkered patterns is just the beginning. Want to know how to pull this off without it being too daunting? It's best to stick to some simple rules. When mixing patterns, first look at your colours and see how you can coordinate them. Start small by pairing a bold pattern with something more muted, and once you get more comfortable you can change it up and experiment as you please!
3.Baggy Everything
Coming off the highs of wearing sweatpants all day during the height of the pandemic, it’s hard to go back to the tight clothes that were so popular before. Although it’s not very practical to wear sweatpants in the summer months, there are still other ways to get away with wearing baggy clothes. One example of this is a huge trend seen on TikTok recently which is parachute pants. Similar to cargo pants but even baggier, this trend is perfect for a comfortable and breezy look. Oversized flannels and button-up shirts are also perfect for almost any outfit, whether it’s getting a little cold or if you just want that extra coverage.
4.Long Jean Shorts
Baggier and longer jean shorts have been a trend since the comfy craze since the beginning of the pandemic. Whether the shorts are baggy or fitted, this trend allows for more coverage, and is helpful for a casual day out or to dress up for a night out. Keeping comfort is key to this trend, but with a fitted pair of longer shorts, you’ll be able to fit it into your closet easily and pair it for several different occasions. How long is too long you ask? That’s all up to you. We won’t judge you if your new shorts are comparable to jeans.
5.Early 2000s Fashion
The 2000s called and they want their low rise jeans back. Even if you have no interest in going back to the horrors of low-rise jeans (no judgement if you do), there are still lots of other trends from the time you can incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. Corsets and hair clips have been making huge waves over the past year, but to make it even more on-trend, go for some more unique pieces. Small sunglasses, like the ones that your dad would’ve worn, is a huge trend seen in celebrities such as Bella Hadid. Juicy Couture, and other velvet matching tracksuits, have also made a huge comeback, coming back with the iconic looks that Paris Hilton sported. Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney was recently photographed in an iconic pink sparkly low rise skirt, a nod to the low rise everything trend coming back. Denim on denim is also back in style, which can be a bit intimidating for some. For some inspiration, think back to Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears’s iconic matching look at the 2001 American Music Awards. Not sure where to get into these trends? These styles can best be found in thrift, charity, and vintage shops. This way you can find something other people won’t have, and it could even be authentic to the time.
6.Festival Fits
Now that festival season has finally come back, there’s been a huge influx of the fashion trends that’s come out of it. Depending on the type of festival, whether it be Coachella or a rave, what clothes you wear to them depends on what the overall vibe is and your comfort levels. Pants, dresses, and skirts have seen a huge comeback wave despite being written off from the festival scene years prior. TikTok has helped to make different kinds of clothing more acceptable at these festivals, with comfort being a priority. Many celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber went to Coachella sporting casual wear, a trend called “normcore” by people on TikTok. Normcore, a trend that’s recently resurfaced from a couple of years ago, is now more focused on basics and neutral colours. Other festival goers went with a chic but comfortable look with a beach cover-up-esque crochet dress. Cowboy-themed outfits, chains, ripped up clothes, chain-mail tops and dresses, crotchet, matching sets, and even furry boots, are just some of the huge trends of this festival season. TikTok has helped to normalize fashion for different body types so that everyone can enjoy a festival and feel comfortable. Wear what you feel good and comfortable in; that’s what will make the festival experience great.
7.The Tumblr Girl Aesthetic
Trending all over TikTok, whether you like it or not, in the early 2010s Tumblr Girl Aesthetic, also known as Tumblrcore. People all over TikTok have been trying to bring this aesthetic back for months now, but this summer is the perfect time to incorporate these pieces into your wardrobe. If you’re unfamiliar with this aesthetic, it was a time of minimalism, knee socks, and American Apparel. The Tumblr girl aesthetic was worn by a mainly teenage and the young adult population that was hooked on the platform, one that was just as addictive as TikTok. It was usually an “alternative” style that was different from the popular, colourful styles of the 2010s. The style revolved around certain basics that were different from the norm, which was usually meant to convey moodiness, gloominess, or overall teenage angst while listening to the Arctic Monkeys or The 1975. The trend also gained some controversy due to its prioritization of skinny white models and influencers over others.
Want to know which pieces from this era are trending so you can opt in? Tennis skirts have made a huge comeback recently and are an easy piece to style, especially in staple colours like black or white. Knee socks can be incorporated on a chillier day, with a pair of shorts, a skirt, or a dress. Combat or oxford style shoes can be worn with virtually any outfit and are a staple piece, especially in transition months. You can’t forget about the tights; wear them with the previously mentioned knee socks and combat boots on a chilly day, or wear a lighter pair on a warm day with a dress, shorts, or a skirt. For a more modern take on the look, opt for platform boots or shoes, or just incorporate some pieces back into your wardrobe. We’re all for bringing the Tumblr Girl Aesthetic back, but this time let’s make it inclusive to all body types — it's about the fashion this time.
8.The Clean Girl Aesthetic
This aesthetic is minimalist and one that promotes self-help and self-love. It includes “no makeup” makeup looks, and a timeless, minimalist fashion. From staple, neutral pieces such as blue light wash or 90s style jeans and white button-ups, to matching clothing sets and canvas tote bags, the options are almost endless. Pleated pants, casual and oversized blazers, biker shorts, white shoes such as Converse or low-top shoes such as Nike Dunks are perfect to help with this aesthetic. Accessorizing with some simplistic gold jewelry and claw clips is another popular way to achieve this look. This aesthetic is best achieved when sticking to neutral colours, such as nudes, golds, white, black, brown. TikTok and Pinterest are great places to get some inspiration to follow this aesthetic. Many of these pieces can be found in second-hand shops, and you might already have some of these pieces in your closet. It might also be wise to invest in some pieces, as while it’s a trending aesthetic, many are so timeless that they won’t go out of style. Celebrities to look at when trying to achieve this look include Hailey Bieber, who’s always seen wearing simple, timeless pieces, always looking put together. Look to actress Madison Beer and model Kaia Gerber for even more inspiration on how to pull off this “model off-duty”-like trend.
